Gerald D. Alpern, Ph. D., is an existential psychologist and child custody expert working with and writing about the changes in male and female roles, adult relationships and family dilemmas for over 25 years. Formerly a professor at Indiana University Medical School since 1976, he maintains a practice in Aspen, Colorado. Early in his career he focused on research and treatment of emotional problems of children and their families. Since leaving university life, his interests have moved toward adult development problems including effects of the cultural revolution in male and female roles. His extensive experience in court as a child custody expert, as an out-of-court marital counselor and divorce mediator, and as a representative of children in scores of custody evaluations has led Dr. Alpern to believe that today's social and legal systems are unnecessarily involved in ending a devitalized marriage. His current book and workshops deal with avoiding legal and emotional traps of divorce. Visit his website, called The Development Check Up.

FAMILY

"It is only in home-relations that people are true enough to each other, - and show what human nature is, the beauty of it, the divinity of it. We are otherwise all on our guard against each other."
    LAFCADIO HEARN,
    Lafcadio Hearn: Life and Letters,
    edited by Elizabeth Bisland
